I was over in the Pudong district of Shanghai this morning for a meeting. As is very common in Shanghai in recent years a new skyscraper is under construction. This one (the one on the left in the picture) is going to be the Shanghai World Financial Center (or apparently also know as Shanghai Hills by the Japanese development company Mori – not a very original name as Mori’s big development in Roppongi (Tokyo) is called Roppongi Hills). On the right is the Jin Mao Tower which has the Grand Hyatt on the top floors. Apparently the World Financial Center will also have a Hyatt (this time a Park Hyatt) on the 79th to 93rd floors replacing the Grand Hyatt and the world’s tallest hotel. This new building is really going up fast now after a number of years of delays. The pace at which this skyscraper is going up recently, I think they’ve added at least 20 floors in just the past month, matches the pace of change here in Shanghai.
